One of the problems with fandom racism.
Dec. 3rd, 2024 07:29 amWell of course, racism is nothing BUT a problem. But I have found when fans complain about every single female actor or actor of color in a superhero or sci-fi project, if the character happens to coincidentally be shitty, nobody will listen to those complaints because those fans are talking about Woke agendas and Social Justice Warriors and toxic shit like that.
Do you remember the TV version of The Flash? Candice Patton played Barry Allen's wife Iris West and she was harassed and bullied for the crime of having dark skin. And let me be clear. There was nothing wrong with the character of Iris West. Yeah, she was annoying at points, but the show was shittily written and that was true of everybody, Barry Allen included.
Jesse L. Martin played her father Detective Joe West, and he eventually hooked up with the show's D.A. who was initially a supporting guest star played by Danielle Nicolet. Her name was Cecile. No problems yet. Of course another Black actress automatically raised the fandom's ire. But really there were no real problems. Yet.
She was in the show often enough Nicolet was eventually promoted to a series regular. That was probably a mistake, but not every single main character in a superhero show needs to be a superhero.
But the show eventually saddled her with Metahuman powers, and this new goofy persona, and completely inconsistent characterization. Finally, to add insult to injury, they wound up saying near the end that she was one of the most powerful Metahumans in existence. On the Flash's own damn show! An original character, with no ties to the comics, or connections with the fandom came in and basically supplanted the Flash as the series' most significant character. And these are all valid complaints.
But nobody was making those arguments. They weren't pissed at her oversized role because it was inappropriate for a tertiary character. They were pissed because it supposedly occurred because the show was too Woke and doing it's part for Black Lives Matter.
The Flash was an extremely problematic and badly written series. I have nothing but bad things to say about it. But because of racism nobody ever complained about the correct things. The Flash had a SHIT-TON of things wrong with it, but those racist fans were too dumb to understand what those things actually were.
If you ever wonder why genre TV is often so terrible despite fans giving feedback to the creators, it's because the fans never give negative feedback for the right reasons or about the right things, so they can be freely ignored. People with ACTUAL problems with The Flash's terrible writing could be safely ignored too because of the assholes fucking bullying and stalking Patton and Nicolet.
I would LOVE to have an honest gripe sesh with other people who hate The Flash, and Supergirl, and the other Arrowverse shows. But those haters are too dumb to actually understand what IS wrong with those shows and their axes to grind are entirely political instead of about quality.
Bad and shitty TV does exist. But fandom takes away its own power and influence by behaving deplorably. It's no wonder if a show is doing poorly it never course-corrects. They are never given the right feedback.
Honestly, I don't think fandom should have ANY power over their fandoms anyways. We are bad for them. But they DO have it. And I think they have less than they could because they are always so fucking toxic about every little damn thing.
People on Toon Zone sometimes got pissed off at my negative reviews. Because every single complaint I had was rational and / or true. If you love a project, it's easier to dismiss criticism if the critic is full of shit. And that's how I see toxic fandom. They are easy to ignore.
