Ed Wood and Uwe Boll have nothing on Weird Al Yankovic.

Why is it so great? It is unlike any other bad movie I have ever seen. Because I actually enjoy watching it. Plan 9 From Outer Space is fun to make fun of, but it is actually a chore to sit through, as are Uwe Boll's trainwrecks. Plan 9 is shockingly boring, even if you get to point at the screen a few times and giggle.

UHF ain't like that. It's a comedy, and it is genuinely funny, so it is at least successful at that. But as badly written, acted, and produced as the film is, you don't actually feel like you are watching a bad movie at the time you are watching it. You have fun and enjoy it. Only after the lights come up do you realize how stupid you feel for some of the stuff you laughed at. Yappy's Dog Treats? Stupidest joke ever, and I was still rolling. And after the movie's over, I am quite ashamed of that.

You root for the heroes and hiss at the villains. And the villains are roundly punished at the end. More than any other movie villains. UHF is such a feel-good movie because the good guys win and the bad guys are humiliated. It doesn't matter how dumb it is while you are watching it. You just want to scream with Stanley Spadowski "These floors are dirty as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!"

Spadowski's speech is legitimately inspiring. And that's what make it so funny. Because it is stupid at the same time.

And what is Anthony Geary even doing in this movie? Philo is such a nothing character, but he is as memorable to me as Large Marge from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. And he's a sucky character, so I don't know why he's stuck with me this long.

If somebody asks me if there is a bad movie they must see, the first title out of my mouth is always "UHF". Without fail. Everyone loves it, no matter how much it sucks. And it is the only bad movie that I genuinely adore. I don't feel smugly superior to UHF. Because I loved it. And if all bad movies were this enjoyable, entertainment would be in great shape.

I kind of get the idea that there is a good show hiding around the edges of it, and some funny things happen, but it isn't quite there, and it never will be. It reminds me a lot of ALF. Appealing premise, some funny jokes, and yet still absolutely terrible.

UHF is the same way, but far superior to both, because it IS actually funny, and will make you feel good while you're watching it (even if you'll hate yourself afterwards). Mulaney is just... not. I've seen every episode so far and I will not be reviewing it on my journal just because I don't think the effort is worth it. Which is a sentiment that should sum up the show in general.

I don't think I'll be able to enjoy UHF again.

This blogger had a commentary on what happened and tried to make sense of the audience's reaction. I think they were expecting Kaufman and received Marge Schott.

I don't blame Jerry Seinfeld for being pissed but something tells me it's for the wrong reason.
