Warning: Green Lantern potentially has a spoiler that COULD pertain to the live-action Green Lantern movie. If you've seen Emerald Knights it won't be a factor reading the review but if you haven't you might want to either wait to see the cartoon movie or the live-action one before reading it.
The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes "The Ultron Imperative"
Good. It didn't wow me or anything but I was pleasantly surprised they had Thor return so soon. As much as I loved Wolverine and the X-Men, it would have tried to dangle that plot thread for episodes on end. Which is cool when you're watching the episodes on DVD but kind of maddening when you're watching them over the air, at the mercy of unpredictable scheduling.
I've never been crazy about Ultron and I'm glad they didn't go the Kang route and make this a three-parter. I really want to find out what happened to Nick Fury. SHIELD just ain't SHEILD without him.
Any Hulk updates? Not really, but he was there and I enjoyed him. I wonder what's going to happen now that he's turned back to Banner. They can either ignore that next episode or make it a big deal. I kind of hope they ignore it just because I enjoy Hulk so much and every second he isn't onscreen is lesser for it. Besides Banner PROMISED Hulk if he joined the Avengers he would stay out of his way and I don't want to see Banner made a liar.
Tony and Hank really got on my nerves. The whole Ultron thing was entirely their faults and I kind of wish SHIELD at least TRIED to arrest them for it.
I wonder what the big coming threat the Enchantress hinted at will be. Since they left the audience wondering in the very last scene, I think it's reasonable to conclude it's happening soon. Can't wait.
Fine episode. ****.
The Looney Tunes Show "Class Reunion"
Excellent. Some truly funny stuff. I've noticed that the show goes for more observational humor than slapstick but Daffy is such a great character to explore I don't mind at all.
I loved the resolution of Bugs cheering Daffy up by telling him he hasn't peaked yet and the reveal that Bugs is Batman. Too funny. *****.
Merrie Melodies "Cock Of The Walk"
Another Foghorn Leghorn toon, this one actually has a catchy melody. ****.
Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote "Fe Fi Fo Dumb"
I'll give the new Roadrunner CGI toons credit: they have somehow managed to occassionally create scenarios that Chuck Jones never did. And before this I had thought Jones had covered everything. The "temporary effects may only be temporary" was a great gag. ****.
MAD "ArThor / Big Fang Theory"
Enough with the Twilight parodies. Do boys (obviously the target audience of the show) even WATCH Twilight? That said there were a ton of other things I liked. I liked the Ashton Kutcher slam (the Demi Moore put-down was brutal and I can't believe it aired on a kids show) and some of the parts of Alvin and the Monks. Yo-Gi-Bear was silly and I wasn't digging the Arthur / Thor mashup until after the end credits where Alfred E. Neuman appeared as Nick Fury. THAT'S how you close a show. ****.
Green Lantern: Emerald Knights
I was skeptical when I heard the new Green Lantern was going to be given the Gotham Knight treatment. Six interlocking stories didn't work for that turd so I wasn't looking forward to this. It's not that bad though. In fact parts of it were pretty great. I loved the segment Mogo Doesn't Socialize and though it was one of the very best things ever put out but the DC Universe Animated Original Movie franchise. The rest of the stories weren't as good but the movie gets a good grade just because of that one.
I really wanted to hear the tale of Hal Jordan and the squirrel.
Decent movie. ***1/2.
The First Lantern: I liked this segment because it was part of the mythology I had never heard of before. Pretty cool. ***1/2.
Kilowog: That instructor guy really got on my nerves. Kilowog was cute though. **1/2.
Laira: The weakest of the segments. Overlong and boring. Any good things? The fight between Laira and her father had neat camera moves. It reminded me of something directed by Jouquim Dos Santos. *1/2.
Mogo Doesn't Socialize: A gem. I had heard of Mogo because of Batman: The Brave And The Bold but this story of a Green Lantern who is a living planet actually does the concept justice. A pleasure to watch and one of my faves. *****.
Abin Sur: If I'm to take this movie correctly, Sinestro will not become the villain in the Green Lantern movie and they'll save that for the sequel. Not a great idea in my book. A bigger mistake than saving Mandarin for at least the third Iron Man movie. ***.
Emerald Knights: The framing story is pretty good. The climax is exciting (Mogo!) and the animation is pretty sweet. Still, it's hard to get excited for a story that has so many slow points that the Lanterns have time to tell Arisia a whopping five stories. ****.
DVD Menu: Still. *.
