Spoilers beneath the fold. As always, TV reviews first.
MAD "I Love You, Iron Man / Ben 10 Franklin"
The Iron Man stuff was funny precisely because Tony has been portrayed as such a huge jerk in the movies and both Pepper and Rhodey both always seem on the verge of killing him. Ben 10 Franklin was a bust however. They need to stop doing so many kid franchise parodies. MAD Magazine is successful with kids and adults because it parodies EVERYTHING and not just cartoons or Disney Channel series. ***.
MAD "Class Of The Titans / Zeke And Lex Luthor"
Weak episode. Surprisingly the Luthor stuff was pretty funny but I do not understand references to shows I do not watch. Dang me. **.
Batman: The Brave And The Bold "The Plague Of The Prototypes!"
Okay, I'll fess up. I shouldn't have been so hard on the Doom Patrol episode or the Starro two-parter. My bad, completely. I didn't enjoy either of those episodes but they DID serve a huge purpose: it made the show exciting again because you always think they are going to kill the guest characters off even when they don't!
They even hinted at Proto's demise in the teaser with the "death" of G.I. Robot (seriously, DC Comics?) and all signs pointed at the lovable Proto (voiced cleverly by Adam West) sharing the same fate including the notion of grand sacrifice. So it was a complete pleasant surprise that Proto not only survived by was responsible for saving the day! Awesome!
As in every incarnation I can take or leave Black Mask but the episode left me in such a enjoyable mood I don't care a jot. ****.
Smallville "Ambush"
I know every episode can't be great but the show was on such a hot streak I'm bummed they finally broke it. The Lanes are annoying and the "reveal" that they were actually testing Lois and not Clark turned out to be a happy ending cop-out. Jeez, Louise and the last time I saw Lucy she was evil. I dipped out a bit during seasons five and six. Did I miss something? **1/2.
The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes! "Living Legend"
SO glad they finally got to Captain America. I was afraid they were going to go the JLU route like they did with Shayera and reintroduce her halfway through the season. Luckily they took a page out of the book of Wolverine and the X-Men and Storm's introduction.
I miss the Hulk. I like that they seem to update the main titles based on which Avengers are in each episode. Cool!
Good episode. ****.
The Simpsons "Treehouse Of Horror XXI"
Opening: Love the Monster version of The Office. Funny. ****1/2. War and Pieces: What is this parodying anyways? Jumunji? Kind of stretch to be honest. **. Master And Cadaver: I wasn't enjoying a second of this depressing segment (Hugh Laurie was wasted) until the reveal of Maggie in the tub and the A Clockwork Orange Homage. Seriously, how great was that? ***. Tweenlight: Good: Daniel Radcliffe. Bad: Everything else: **1/2.. TOH Overall: ***.
Family Guy "Halloween On Spooner Street"
Better than I expected. The Quagmire stuff was great, the Chris-Meg hook-up made me gag and Stewie's trick-or-treat plot was fun too. Decent. ***1/2.
The Cleveland Show "It's The Great Pancake, Cleveland Brown"
God, why does this show have to make Cleveland so mean and unlikable to Junior? Can Seth MacFarlane not function unless the dad of one of his series is a complete butthole? Sheesh. *1/2.
American Dad "Best Little Horror House In Langley Falls"
Best cartoon of the night. Stan's serial killer idea WAS brilliant even if Roger spicing up the situation wasn't. Wasn't feeling the Steve subplot though. And where was Haley? Still, the Stan/Roger/Francine plot MORE than made up for any of the episode's flaws. *****.
Community "Aerodynamics Of Gender"
We've seen plots like the Abed one tonight a zillion times before (they've even done the Terminator thing on Buffy for Pete's sake) and this wasn't exactly a new take. However the Jeff/Troy trampoline plot was genius. And it really shouldn't have been. We've ALSO seen Garden of Eden plots in cartoons and comedy before and we KNOW Jeff and Troy were going to screw it up. What was so pleasurably unexpected was the revelation that the godlike mentor was a racist sociopath. And they even managed to make it completely fit! Hilarious. Right. It's gonna be a maze. ***1/2.
30 Rock "Gentleman's Intermission"
I love how Jack resolved Liz's problem and did so by completely going too far. Funny. Tracy and Jenna had a good run too especially her beating the snot out of Kenneth. A fine episode. ****.
The Office "Christening"
I love the new tack the episode approached Micheal with: he acted like a complete butthole because he was practically driven to it by the awful office-mates. Loved his newfound appreciation for the community of religion. Loved Toby's "Why?" to God too. The ending of one of the people on the bus getting off with Andy and Micheal was priceless too.
They better not screw up this show. I'm watching you, Office. ****.
Superman/Shazam!: The Return Of Black Adam
A collection of DC Showcase shorts featuring slightly extended cuts of The Spectre, Jonah Hex and Green Arrow along with a new half-hour short starring Superman and Captain Marvel. Both George Newbern and Jerry O'Connell reprise their Justice League Unlimited roles even though the short is clearly not DCAU. And it's pretty fabulous. The "extended" shorts do little for me (Green Arrow is still good and my negative opinions of The Spectre and Jonah Hex still stand) but I have to give Bruce Timm credit for including Batman: The Brave And The Bold's "Chill Of The Night!" episode since there wasn't a DC Animated Universe episode with The Spectre in b.t.'s continuity. It's one of Brave and the Bold's best episodes and bumps up the grade of the entire disc half a star. DVD Overall: ****.
Superman/Shazam!: The Return Of Black Adam:
This short is pretty great and fun to watch. What I liked best about it, was despite the fact that it had some adult themes in it, it was rare for one of the recent DC projects in that it remembered to be fun and campy. The ending was a little dark but Captain Marvel did the right thing so I can forgive it. It was great to see Captain Marvel's origin told so well as well as surprising appearances from some of his cast. I laughed when Billy Batson accidentally said "Shazam!" mid-air and fell like a rock. Something tells me that gag has been done before but I still found it funny. ****1/2.
The Spectre:
Extended Version. Time and distance have not warmed me to this short. If anything I think it's worse. The pretty animation no longer impresses and I'm just left with the same sour feeling I had when I first saw it. And Mark Hamill is a hundred times The Spectre that Gary Cole is. *.
Green Arrow:
Extended Version. This was the first DC Showcase short I enjoyed and it was cool to see it again. Neil MacDonough is a fabulous Green Arrow and this was fast and even funny in places. Good stuff. ****.
Jonah Hex:
Extended Version. I still don't care for this much but unlike The Spectre short I WILL concede that there is some merit to this one. The atmosphere is moody and the voice cast is top-notch. How top-notch? Jason Marsden has two roles and is completely unrecognizable in both. **1/2.
Bruce Timm's Top Picks:
Jonah Hex - Showdown (From Batman: The Animated Series): One of my favorite episodes EVER. I love the Western feel and Jonah Hex as a cowboy is MUCH cooler, creepier and funnier here than in JLU's Once and Future Thing. GREAT old-fashioned dialogue throughout the episode and the revelation at the end is just great especially because Batman actually agrees to a truce with Ra's for once. Fantastic. *****.
The Spectre - The Chill Of The Night! (From Batman: The Brave And The Bold): Quite possibly the greatest Brave and the Bold episode of all time this instant classic written by Paul Dini is the first serious episode of the show to make me sit up and take notice. This could have EASILY been a Batman: The Animated Series episode from the way it was structured but the amount of stuff it was able to get away with is something Fox standards and practices wouldn't have touched with a ten foot poll. This episode was great because it had voice roles for Adam West and Julie Newmar (As Thomas and Martha Wayne) as well as Kevin Conroy (as the Phantom Stranger) and Mark Hamill (as The Spectre). To make the geek cred even more complete Richard Moll makes an appearance and I'm pretty sure he actually did Two-Face's voice as well! Add in Zatanna in the teaser and you have the best episode ever! *****.
Green Arrow - Initiation (From Justice League Unlimited): Good introduction even though I have never been crazy about Green Arrow. I LOOOOVEEE Supergirl though so that made the episode worth watching. I also loved Batman's brief scenes at the beginning and the end. ***1/2.
Shazam! - Clash (From Justice League Unlimited): I love the fact that even though Captain Marvel DID do the right thing, that he was wrong, wrong, wrong. Nice and ambiguous. I love the paranoid vibe the entire season gave us. One quibble: Wouldn't Lex's reformation have been easier for the audience to believe if the animators hadn't given him such a smarmy look and demeaner throughout the episode? ****.
Batman: The Brave And The Bold Trailer: As bad as Warner Home Video trailers of DVD releases usually are this one misses the boat completely. It's dark tone is SO not in the spirit of the light-hearted show. It feels like amateur hour at WHV. *.
DVD Menu: Love the music. ***1/2.
Doctor Who: Dreamland
I'll be the first to admit this computer animated special featuring the Tenth Doctor isn't perfect but it SO blows The Infinite Quest out of the water so I'll be grading it accordingly. Georgia Moffet (Jenny from The Doctor's Daughter) has a surprisingly believable American accent here playing a waitress named Cassie in New Mexico who gets caught up with the Doctor and her friend Jimmy amid Area 51, Roswell hijinks.
The reason this was better than The Infinite Quest was because it felt like a complete story rather than several ten minute segments loosely held together by an over-arching arc. But it shares the one great thing The Infinite Quest did: David Tennant performs the Doctor exactly the same as in live-action. It's NOT the same impact because the somewhat subpar animation botches his visual mannerisms BADLY but you can tell it's the Doctor by his subtle voice inflections and the way he gets amused or angry. Great stuff.
Also interesting to note that David Warner (Star Trek, Batman: The Animated Series) plays the Viperox leader. It's interesting to note because they treated his voice so much he doesn't sound all that much like Warner who has a completely awesome voice if left alone. You can still hear his mannerisms but this was the worst and most unnecessary cartoon voice treatment since they garbled Corey Burton as Brainiac in Static Shock's A League Of Their Own.
This was a VERY good special otherwise and storywise was up to a decent episode of the live-action series. Granted the aliens could never have been budgeted into the show so it nice that they actually took advantage of the animation medium even if the results were mixed. Pretty darn good. ****1/2.
Doctor Who: Greatest Moments
A trio of clip specials with interviews with the cast and guest stars exploring The Doctor, The Companions, and The Enemies. I have a beef and it's not a small one: I wish they had spent a little time on the old show. I understand why they didn't for The Companions (the list is never ending) but I would have liked to have spent some time with the first eight Doctors and seen the first appearances of The Daleks, The Cybermen, The Master, The Sontarans, and Davros explored. Still, the specials were a good way for Whobie newbies to play catch up. Overall: ***1/2.
The Doctor: It's kind of surprising how little time they focused on The Eighth Doctor. I have a sneaking suspicion that's because Christopher Eccelston is never available for interviews but both Billie Piper and John Barrowman showed up in these Greatest Moments specials so they could have talked to them. ***1/2.
The Companions: Spoiler alert! The most spoilery of the specials that is either a good way to catch up to the series for people who don't want to wait or a way to completely ruin the experience. You've been warned. ***1/2.
The Enemies: I wish they had gotten into the Gas Mask "Mommy" monsters more and ESPECIALLY the Weeping Angels considering that they returned in the fifth series. Good though and enjoyed seeing all of John Simm as the Master's best bits. ***1/2.
DVD Menu Doctor Who: Dreamland: Lovely. ****1/2.

Superman/Shazam!
My copy is still on the way, and I can't wait. But I'm pretty mad that only the Blu-Ray has commentary, allegedly.

Date: 2010-11-12 02:56 pm (UTC)Superman/Shazam: Eh, I don't really care that much about commentary. A least they aren't doing what Fantasia is doing and having a new short be Blu-Ray exclusive. THAT would tick me off.
Question: Have you gotten Dollhouse Season 2 on DVD yet? It is SO awesome! I'm doing a review and I NEED someone to dish about it with. Seriously, if you haven't, pick it up.

Date: 2010-11-13 12:20 am (UTC)Dollhouse: I haven't seen Season 2 nor got the set, yet. I'm so busy right now. Ugh, but, yes I totally would jump to talk Dollhouse with you!
On a related note, I thought this was freaky but this show on AMC called Rubicon that I suggested to you didn't get renewed for a second season. And who was in the staff? Zack Whedon. It's like the Whedon's are cursed for no reason!! Argh, that was such a good show, too.
no subject
Date: 2010-11-13 01:18 pm (UTC)Dollhouse: Get it now. We need to dish. Joss wasn't cursed on this particular show. He got a second season he totally wasn't expecting and used it to wrap everything up. I wish Firefly, Buffy and Angel had gotten such definite endings.
