Doctor Who "Lucky Day"

It's a good episode. It's a righteous episode taking on rightwing demagogues. My problem is it's JUST so fucking cruel. The meanness is the thing Russell T Davies brought to Doctor Who, and forget his shady and ridiculous plot turns for a moment. I think that's my real objection to both his tenure on Doctor Who AND Torchwood. Just the spectacular cruelty shown Ruby here is infuriating.

Mrs. Flood sucks but I'm betting the Doctor is right about his prediction. The Doctor doesn't usually get that pissed off at a human. But Conrad is a special level of suck.

Kate Stewart is a badass. My favorite notion is she is very glad the Doctor isn't here. Not because he would have TRIED to stop her. But because he would have SUCCESSFULLY stopped her. I'm glad he wasn't there too for that reason.

Also fuck Trinity Wells.

It's a good episode in the sense that the Mrs. Flood stuff keeps getting direr and direr. But it makes the viewer feel dirty and bad, which is a crazy thing to bring to this franchise, much less repeatedly shove it down our throats. The episode is well-done. I still didn't like it. **1/2.

Law & Order: Organized Crime "Promesse Infrante"

That ending was a fustercluck. I REALLY don't like Eli Stabler. He just made things a thousand times more complicated for his father.

To join the gang Reyes has to get the shit beat out of him. Aren't people the stupidest? This is why I hate people.

Sometimes I hate television too.

Thinking more on this and I'm genuinely upset. Because it's fucking stupid. What are the odds it's Eli who enters the building and shoots THAT specific kid? The franchise was very well regarded in the earlier days for taking an entirely measured and realistic approach to policework and courtrooms. Somewhere along the way the Mothershow and SVU became "Ripped From The Headlines" trashy tabloid fodder. But I liked this show because the characters and the things they were going through felt more grounded and believable. Shit like this is ridiculous.

I have a saying. Every great TV show is two bad episodes in a row away from becoming an irreparably terrible TV show. This episode was NOT that cautionary first bad episode. But it's one of those episodes that could and probably WILL lead to that. This was frankly the most worrying thing I've ever seen from the show, and even if those two bad episodes occur later on in the season, I will still consider this one the shark jump. *.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit "Shock Collar"

The very nature of the show means it's sometimes going to be upsetting.

This was TOO upsetting. This went TOO far. I am very disturbed and a little disgusted. I find this show has value for the positive moral judgments it places on the people fighting evil. This was simply too much evil.

I couldn't stand it. I couldn't take it.

I like that about me. *.
