Also reviews for the latest episodes of Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims, and the two episode premiere of Law & Order: Organized Crime.
Gremlins: The Wild Batch "Never Get Out Of The Truck"
The Clamp stuff was hilarious in 1990, but for obvious reasons it hits differently in 2025. But kudos to the show for getting John Glover for Rodney Clamp. Very nice tie-in.
Grandpa is kind of a cad, isn't he? I'm learning things about him I didn't want to know. And as the Air Spirit proved, many of those things are actually unforgivable.
Pretty good. ****.
Gremlins: The Wild Batch "Always Ask For Backstory"
Chang being bad is surprise but it's also not out of nowhere.
I love they got Keith David for the Ghost Sheriff. I love that the fact that he was a Black lawman was actually brought up.
During Grandpa's story I kept thinking he was contemptible until we got to the end and I realized he's not all bad.
Those deaths were gruesome.
Very interested in what Noggin has to say.
Cool episode. ****.
Gremlins: The Wild Batch "Never Try The Cider"
Oh, my God! The Coyote and the Roadrunner! This franchise is INSANE!
I'm not giving this episode a passing grade. Why? I think Sam describing whoever tied them up as a "evil monster" was badly written dialogue. And even though the stuff with Noggin was enjoyable, I'm tired of characters saying unrealistic, non-credible things just to move the plot forward.
Sure, it's cool that Chang revealed his true colors. But I don't like how pat Sam's precise words were and how they were only what they were to hurt Gizmo. Fiction needs to do better. **1/2.
Gremlins: The Wild Batch "Always Or Never Make Wishes"
Am I wrong? Because it seems to me like Noggin is headed for a redemption arc. Which seems really cool to me. But crazy idea, right?
Regardless of whether freeing Kung-Kung is the wrong move or not, Sam should have backed Elle's play. Why? Chang, bastard that he is, proved why. Because if his mother was in the same danger he WOULD go along with it. Him refusing to do that for Elle is selfish.
Another good one. ****.
Gremlins: The Wild Batch "Always Make The Hard Choice"
What a great ending. I've noticed a distressing lack of Gremlins this season, and not only did they redeem Noggin, they made the Gremlins the heroes. What fun.
Noggin's stuff with Gizmo was wonderful. I loved it.
Chang saying her and Sam's Mom were even over threatening each other's lives is bullshit. Because she didn't have a deadly weapon on him when she did it.
I'm glad Elle got her Mom back, but Grandpa finding the third wishing stone means a third season is a must. But if there isn't one, that was a memorable finale to go out on. *****.
Law & Order "Play With Fire, Part 1"
I hate this show and only watched it for the crossover. My hatred is so deep I don't want to spend too much time on this review. I'll get too angry.
This shit episode was written by Rick Eid and Art Alamo, the two worst writers on the show. As far as crossovers go, it's a total fucking failure. Crossovers need to put their best foot forward for somebody who only watches one of the two shows. They are designed to get other people interested in the show they don't watch. For me, it's this show because it's such a fucking toxic trainwreck every week. Leave it to Eid to kill off the beloved SVU character of Maria. This episode also engages in the Mothershow's epic bad policework, this time involving SVU detectives. From Liv Benson stupidly losing track of Anna, to Bruno "Being made" without ever once acting like he wasn't a cop, it pisses me off this televised abortion's shitty writing affect characters I actually give a shit about.
This is my first introduction to Brady. And I don't just dislike her because Liv instantly seems to. Like Liv, I blame her incompetence for Maria getting killed. She is legit sucky at the Job, from escalating a situation Liv was trying to calm down, to threatening a sexual assault victim. And the ICE raid during the teaser is pretty much the best example I could ever give about why I don't watch and tolerate this shit anymore.
I don't expect the SVU conclusion to be great (this episode has given it little to work with). But I expect it will be a pretty normal, standard hour of television that doesn't make me pissed off beyond all belief like this just did. I'm disgusted and I fucking hate these crossovers. 0.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit "Play With Fire, Part 2"
Stabler's cameo was awesome. What a great use for him.
Cassie's life is not blown up at the end because unlike the Mothershow this one is not written by total sociopaths.
Honestly, it was just passable. Probably because it was anchored to the shitty first part and couldn't be anything better. I'm actually just glad this is over. ***.
Law & Order: Organized Crime "Lost Highway"
It's the SVU guy in him. Once they start messing with sex trafficking and killing little kids Stabler doesn't give a FUCK about the undercover assignment.
Speaking of which first "fuck" and "shit" in the entire Law & Order franchise. Not sure how to feel about that.
Sort of paused on the Joe Jr. stuff, but at least it hasn't been forgotten.
Dean Norris now a series regular.
Stabler's stuff with Bunny is SO good. He is SO good with kids.
I missed this show. ****.
Law & Order: Organized Crime "Dante's Inferno"
The ending suggests supernatural elements. Not ENTIRELY a first for the franchise (see the ending to Homicide: The Movie) but the first time it's happened on a Law & Order show.
I actually thought it was pretty great. Randall's stuff at Elliot's bedside was really cool as was Bernadette's. I really liked the episode. ****.
