Also reviews for the latest episodes of The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, and American Dad!.
Dune: Prophecy "Twice Born"
The show continues to be a little dry for my tastes but the ending was bananas.
Desmond's big execution scene was pretty horrific too.
I also like the horror of the automatic drawing scene. That got out of control quick.
Both Valya and Tula strike me as pretty unambiguously evil characters, but in fairness I don't see any good characters on the show. ***.
The Simpsons "Convenience Airways"
My major thought is that the ending was soft. And ALL Simpsons endings are soft. I guess that bothers me in an episode that is otherwise on-point. The nightmare Homer was going through with Maggie on the plane was legit tense and they basically showcased the worst behavior you can do in an enclosed space. And Krusty repeatedly licking the booze off the back of Drederick Tatum's head was the first time in a LONG time the show genuinely made me laugh.
Bart's stuff with the flight attendant would be better if I actually ever liked or sympathized with Bart. Because I literally hate every inch of that character I was not on his side. I needed to be for that bit to work.
I feel like all the pieces for a great episode were present. They just weren't all properly assembled. ***.
Bob's Burgers "They Slug Horses, Don't They?"
The ending was REALLY good, and enough to give the episode a positive grade, but I honestly did not care for the rest. The episode tried to do too much. The drawing sequences were weird, and went on too long, and the flashback to Gayle and Linda as kids didn't add much either. I dug the stuff with the Belchers as very little kids, but Louise was an annoying baby, and Gene has always been gross.
I guess my major problem with the episode is what a chore Louise is. She's annoying, makes everything SO freaking hard, and the second you call her on it, she goes ballistic. I think Gayle is probably a worse and creepier sister than Louise is. But damn, Louise is basically behind ALL the drama in that family, and that's fucking exhausting. She's a narcissist, and I currently have no patience for narcissists.
The end was very chill and cool, but I feel like the rest of the episode was a mess, and I would have preferred an ending that solid and moving in an episode I wasn't this frustrated by. ***1/2.
American Dad! "An Adult Woman"
Roger's persona this week is named Gilda! Yay!
So Hayley is crazier than Roger this week.
I love the Church Chicken guard looking down at Hayley. It doesn't seem like she knows much.
Laughed at the Patrick Swayze pastor.
What a fucked up restaurant.
Hayley's harassment of the pastor was pretty gross. Him getting killed by the mob was insane. And yeah, Roger takes that lead. What a mess.
Yeah, the family was absent. Just realized that at the end.
All roads lead to Raider Dave. Also Hayley is officially an adult woman. She gets a hamster now.
Loved the live-action footage from Dirty Dancing.
Checked IMDB. Emile Ardolino DID indeed direct both Dirty Dancing and Sister Act. And yes, he's way dead.
I loved this episode. ****.
