Also reviews for the season finale of Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai, and the latest episode of Mike Judge's Beavis And Butt-Head.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds "Ad Astra per Aspera"
Unlike the Trek series of the Roddenberry / Berman era, this feels like a future I could live in. It feels like one that is possible. Where humans are still sometimes prejudiced and make mistakes. But they can learn and grow from them. They aren't intractable with their sense of perfection and self-righteousness. They aren't just talking the talk about striving to do better. We can actually witness them doing that, because for the first time ever, the failures are being acknowledged and shown as current problems instead of a past issue that is no longer relevant. I want that future. I will still crossly say I don't much dig a future popular culture where the edgiest guilty pleasure is Gilbert and Sullivan. But we're getting there.
M'Benga's insistence that Spock absolutely hated the Vulcan lawyer was awesome, especially when Spock comes over and says "I'm sorry you had to see that." That was great.
This isn't just Star Trek at its best. It's Star Trek as it always should have been but wasn't. And damn, it's great. My favorite episode of this show so far. The performances were all uniformly outstanding too. I'd suggest the show put this one on the Emmy reel if I didn't believe Emmys were worthless. Amazing television. *****.
Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai "Never Give Up"
Greene ALMOST did it. He ALMOST got to call them Gremlins. Although I thought Gremlins was a World War II thing and this is set in the 1920's.
Either way, the show is pretty awesome.
The stuff in the nightclub and the theater was from the movie. Where do the Gremlins find all of those little clothes anyways?
You can get a TV-PG rating for "Hell on Earth" and "Caca". Both of those things are labeled "course language" if you can believe that. Apparently, I've been swearing wrong all this time.
Good stuff. ****.
Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai "Never Ever Expose Them To Bright Light"
Greene is one of those villains who wants what's worst for everyone. His plans actually won't help him, and are actually pointless. He has no redeeming virtues. His ending was just.
Loved the tag of Noggin on the boat to San Francisco. Means the show isn't over. Without it, I would have considered it a closed ended miniseries.
Changing the Gremlins back to Mogwai was the right move. Although take note: There is an unusual amount of gore due to the sunlight. The fact that Madame Claw apparently had genuine feelings for Gizmo also gives me a sense of remorse for her gruesome ending.
Grandpa and Nuwa being okay after all is because this is a kids show and I like that it's a kids show.
Flasher Gremlin was a nod to the movie.
I love this show so much. That was a great finale. ****1/2.
Mike Judge's Beavis And Butt-Head "The Ciabatta Zone / Warehouse"
The Ciabatta Zone
I thought Beavis was getting a raw deal all throughout the episode but the fact that he was happy at the end of the day made me like "Well, all right then."
I love them suggesting Post Malone already has a smoker's voice box. And that the old dude in the video was his doctor wanting to talk to him for a minute.
You can call Beavis and Butt-Head stupid, but they were insightful enough to recognize Ryan is prouder and more excited to be a CEO than a parent. I wonder how many people watched that show and didn't pick up on how exactly sucky that is. Good for Beavis and Butt-Head, although them concluding the baby must suck means they still aren't rocket surgeons. ****.
Tom Anderson's War Stories
Honestly? I think they've done enough of these. This is getting depressing. *.
Warehouse
At a certain point I was like "Seeing these two behave in such a damaging and stupid fashion is not funny when they are middle aged." And then all those automated carts of spray cheese start rolling by the woman on camera and I was instantly made a liar. "I don't want to say it's idiot-proof... But..." But you really shouldn't say it, lady. Really big laugh there. ****1/2.
Episode Overall: ****.

Re: Newcomer!
Date: 2023-06-25 08:46 pm (UTC)Good to have you Jason. If you like we can talk about your comics or anything else you want. You can write anything want in your journal. I have put you in my circle (the website's way of putting "friended") and I invite you to do the same to me.
