Also reviews for the latest episodes of DC Super Hero Girls, and DC's Legends Of Tomorrow.
Fast & Furious Presents Hobbs & Shaw
That was solid. After seeing the first Fast & Furious film I wouldn't have necessarily pegged it as a franchise that lends itself to an action comedy. But from Fast Five and on the movies have gotten goofier and goofier and something as silly as Hobbs And Shaw now makes sense. It was very fun movie either way.
Helen Mirren was great. Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart also had unbilled cameos. Reynolds was particularly funny as Locke, helpfully spoiling the ending to Game Of Thrones so nobody who hasn't seen it will feel the need to subject themselves to it. Idris Elba was a pretty good villain too.
The selling point of the movie is Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham trading personal insults about each other. Both seem to be having a great deal of fun. I sort of did too.
Nobody will confuse that was high cinema. But it was a good way to kill 2 hours and 15 minutes. ****.
Alternate Opening:
I like the alternate opening better than the beginning of the actual film! I understand why they changed it. It might be a bit TOO comedic so they rearranged things for a more traditional opening action sequence. I still laugh at the fact that Hobbs tattooed "I heart cops" on the dude's face. Especially impressive that he did it legibly without being a tattoo artist. ****1/2.
Deleted / Extended / Alternate Scenes:
SO much great stuff was cut from the movie. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed looking through a bunch of deleted scenes so much. Overall: *****.
Brixton Opens Case And Grenade Explodes:
This might be the only time Brixton smiles in the whole movie. ****.
Extended Hobbs And Sam In The Pancake House:
That's a lotta pancakes. The scene could have stood to be trimmed down anyways. ***.
Extended Pancake House With Locke:
It's only 15 seconds, but 15 extra seconds of Ryan Reynolds is still funny. ****.
Extended Hobbs And Shaw Face Off:
This alternate take was probably reworked when the opening to the film was. ***1/2.
Extended Shaw Tracks Hattie:
Fun. ***1/2.
Hobbs Gets Handsy With Hattie:
I am VERY glad this was cut (for obvious reasons). *.
Extended Hobbs And Hattie Tango:
This was fun, but frankly a little of this goes a long way. I can see why it was trimmed. ***1/2.
Extended Car Chase Dialogue:
Deleted scenes aren't usually fun, because they almost always keep the most fun parts in the movie. For Hobbs And Shaw a LOT of fun stuff was deleted, clearly only for time. ****.
Passport Check - Alternate:
Oh, my God, that was hilarious! I don't don't care if it hurt pacing, they should have used it. *****.
Extendedly Dinkley On The Plane:
You film Kevin Hart riffing, of course he's not gonna stop. You'll have to wind up cutting half of it. It was hilarious though. *****.
Maximum Weight These Parachutes Hold?:
The Metric System is a pain. ***.
Dinkley In His Office - Alternate:
This is much funnier than the scene on the toilet. Also, that was Hobbs' phone. *****.
Samoa Truck With Radio:
Funny. I'm with Shaw. I don't like that music either. ****.
Extended Hobbs And Hattie Talk Family:
Not much was actually trimmed in the movie, but none of the stuff cut hurt the movie for being cut. ***.
Jonah - Let Me Be Clear:
The guy who plays Hobbs' brother doesn't look anything like Dwayne Johnson. But then neither does the woman who play his mother. **1/2.
My Land, My Plan:
You think Hobbs and Shaw are gonna make peace here? Of course they're not. ***1/2.
Extended Hobbs And Hattie At Sunset:
Could have also stood to have been trimmed. **1/2.
Extended Hobbs And Jonah Talk:
Aww! ***1/2.
Extended Shaw And Hattie Talk:
When Shaw is talking about things he needs to make amends for, I think killing Han is at the top of that list. ***.
Extended Battle:
I see why this was pared down. For me it seemed to get monotonous after awhile. **1/2.
Cliffside Walk:
Here the peace Hobbs and Shaw make is even clearer. For the record, I would NEVER call Miss Piggy Kermit the Frog's sidekick. At least not to her face. Not even if I were Jason Statham. ***1/2.
Hobbs And Locke Phone Call:
This specific scene leads me to believe the second virus Locke is warning about at the end of the movie is actually bogus. Mr. Describing The Death Star is obviously starved for Hobbs' attention. ****.
Trailers:
Both trailers are great. Both: *****.
Trailer 1:
SO much fun! The song "Why Can't We Be Friends" should have been in the actual movie! *****.
Trailer 2:
This sort of showcases the humor a little more. *****.
DC Super Hero Girls "The Green Room"
Hal Jordan is SO annoying. I liked Kara calling him Harold though.
This show STILL doesn't know how to write male characters. *1/2.
DC Super Hero Girls "Enter Night Sting"
Kara and Babs are also beyond annoying but it turns out Night Sting is too. I'm glad Karen finally told off everyone who was mistreating her, and even more glad she made sure her future drip persona would never come into being. ***.
DC's Legends Of Tomorrow "This Is Gus"
Yeah, I'm not getting into that. You can accuse me of overreacting, but this thing I'm about to bring up is why I hate The Arrowverse, and is why I'm giving this week a negative review. I'm not even going into anything else because I just don't care.
Any episode that has a character say "If there is one thing I've learned about being a parent as a co-captain of a spaceship..." is automatic hot garbage. I do not need to review or grade anything else. That is a stupid ridiculous line thought up by a stupid person pretending to be a writer. What's scary is that The Flash, Supergirl, and even Lucifer are filled with lines like that. That one struck me as so indefensibly stupid, I'm not going to waste my time commenting on anything else. You can tell me I'm overreacting. But my honest reaction to this episode after that line was disgust. There really is nothing this week could have possibly done to win me back after that. *.
