Oh My God! Gilda and Meek!
Oct. 10th, 2014 02:44 amI cannot believe how far I've come. I really cannot. I've had more breakthroughs with the story in the past nine months than I've had since I created the characters in the first grade. And it is SOOOOOOO easy! It's writing itself. My new mantra is "Characters HAVE to have proper motivations and evil is uncool." Characters having motivations makes me more interested to see what they'll do with them. MUCH moreso than all of the random cr*p that used to happen in the story. But "Evil is uncool"? I am SO happy I came up with that. The problem with old Gilda and Meek is that it was completely lacking a coherent message. I wasn't SAYING anything with it. I was writing a cartoon for the sake of writing a cartoon. I think "Evil isn't glamorous, it's stupid" is a REALLY unique thing for a genre project to state and sets Gilda and Meek apart from everything else.
Thank you Steven Moffat! Your cr*ppy handling of female characters basically meant I HAD to get back to Gilda and Meek. I never would have without "The Time Of The Doctor" and his entire Eleventh Doctor output.
Until the past week I was convinced that I would never finish Gilda and Meek. My best hope was that someone would find what I'd written on my computer after I died and have someone more talented than me make something of it. Now? I'm finishing it. I'm guessing it will take another five years to completely script the entire thing and another two years to commit it to paper. I'm 39 and overweight. I might not live another seven years. But if I do, I'm convinced I'll finish it. Even when I was a teenager I never expected that to actually happen. Not deep down. But now I know I will.
Is it any good? I THINK so but it's frankly irrelevant to me. I've decided I am probably not going to shop it around to publishers and it will just remain a project between me and some people close to me. I couldn't take people hating if it turned out to suck. I am very thin-skinned but fame isn't why I started the project in the first place.
It's good enough for ME. That's all that matters. I know some people who have watched me evolve Gilda and Meek over the years. They actually LIKED the old version (which I maintain sucked). This is gonna blow their minds.
Better than Darkwing Duck is no longer the bar.
When I do finish it (assuming I live that long) I'll figure out how to post pictures on my journal and upload the entire thing. You have been warned!
