We always believe the world is getting worse. America is turning into a police state, we are at war, global warming is accelerating at an alarming rate and nobody is safe anywhere. But we often forget that a lot of the problems that plagued us in the past are no longer an issue.
I am a child of the eighties. I know perfectly well what the biggest threat was back then. Ring around the collar. In EVERY friggin detergent commercial it was claimed that the soap being sold was the only way around this huge problem facing America. However I haven't heard about this huge problem facing working men in at least fifteen years. I have never suffered from it or known anyone who has recently. Sure, dandruff still exists along with pit stains but I have never seen someone with a collar that had a ring around it.
Actually bathtubs in the eighties had the same problem although we still have it today. We just don't talk about it anymore.
Is it possible that the things today that we think are a huge deal (nipple-gate, the war on Christmas) will turn out to be false alarms designed to sell us products or ideas that don't actually exist? Or has America simply progressed to the point where eventually all of our troubles will be eliminated the exact same way ring around the collar has been?
To quote the wise and exalted Terry Bradshaw: "You're next Osama!"
