Also reviews for the latest episodes of His Dark Materials, and Cosmos: Possible Worlds.
Quantum Of Solace
I responded much more positively to this than Casino Royale, which is weird because the reviews were much worse. But this isn't as edgy as Casino Royale, and is played a bit more traditionally, which is something I tend to like, which is probably why.
I found Bond comforting Camille at the end great, but I especially loved him doing the same to Mathis as he died. I like that it's probably because of Mathis which is why he forgave Vesper at the end. Him doing that made me feel much warmer towards him, as I thought his reactions to her death at the end of the last movie were utterly tasteless and coldblooded.
Matthis' death wasn't handled perfectly though. Bond may be right that Mathis wouldn't have cared if he was left in a dumpster and if Bond took the money from the wallet, but by doing that, Bond certainly looked much guiltier as being the one who killed him. It might have been easier, but it was still ill-advised.
The opening sequence was great and bananas. The franchise is known for that, and it was not lost on me that Casino Royale's black and white opening was utterly underwhelming. This was pretty boss.
I enjoyed it. I look forward to Skyfall which is why I bought these movies. ****.
His Dark Materials "Tower Of The Angels"
Terence Stamp, huh? Interesting.
The last scene says you should never mess with witches.
I half expected Lee Scoresby to meet up with Kermit the Frog in his boat in the swamp.
Dust referring to itself as Angels was not made explicit in the book, and we also never heard the idea that they guided human evolution out of a sense of vengeance. It's probable however that instead of being a change, we are simply be given a fuller picture.
Very cool episode. ****.
Cosmos: Possible Worlds "A Tale Of Two Atoms"
The CGI effects on this show must have cost a mint.
Tyson neglects to mention that Marie Curie died of radiation poisoning.
I have to say this is the first episode we've dealt with evil scientists. And they all wanted what was worst for everyone. Normally scientists solve global problems. When it came to nuclear weapons they created them. What's infuriating is that this episode is saying none of them actually had good intentions. Most of them simply wanted to kill a bunch of people to see what would happen. And that was not relegated only to the Germans. We had those guys on our side too.
Truman is portrayed as a cartoonish d-wad here (voiced by Seth MacFarlane). Truthfully, I'm not sure he deserved a more flattering portrayal.
The story of the volcano on St. Pierre is a similarly tragic story because people sort of knew it was coming, and refused to prepare for it because they had other trivial commitments. If they had taken what was happening seriously, far fewer people would have died. I thought the story of the guy in the dungeon who survived was pretty amazing.
Normally this show makes me feel hopeful about the future. This was kind of a drag. But it was still a good episode. ****.
