The thing with the religious symbols has been around for a while - I think it was I Am Legend (the novel from the fifties, dunno about the film versions) that introduced the idea. It made a point out of coming up with semi-scientific explanations for the behaviour of vampires, and had the idea that they hated crosses because, subconsciously, they associated their current state with evil, and were therefore scared of images of good. Then in the sixties there was the spoof film Fearless Vampire Killers, with a Jewish vampire being scared off by the Torah - I think that pretty much codified it...
