Also reviews for the mid-season premiere of Star Trek: Prodigy, and the latest episodes of Stargirl, and Pennyworth: The Origin Of Batman's Butler.
Star Trek: Lower Decks "The Stars Of Night"
Man, that was great. And what I loved is that aside from the Admiral Picard shout-out (which I loved, great reveal for the anonymous benefactor) it focused entirely on the characters exclusive to this show. It sort of took a break from the famous guest cast returns and just finished its season its way.
And while it wasn't EXACTLY a cliffhanger, I DID love the Badgey tag.
I knew the Admiral was no good. I suspected he hired the Breen (although it turns out he didn't) and that he was in cahoots with the reporter from last week (although he wasn't). I AM surprised he was both behind what happened on Deep Space Nine and what happened to Rutherford's memory. The guy was better and worse than I thought in many ways.
The ending of all of the California Class ships coming to the rescue was beyond rewarding.
This show had an amazing finale. I hope there is a Season Four. *****.
Star Trek: Prodigy "Asylum"
The cliffhanger of Admiral Janeway finding the Diviner was great, as was the part where Gwyn remembers the most important memory she forgot.
It looks like the sketchy Starfleet guy on the space station was a Denobulon, although he didn't give a creepy Phlox smile. He also certainly didn't share Phlox's annoying optimism.
I love Murf sticking his tongue out and enjoying their jump from the exploding space station.
Jankom seems smug that Tellarites are founding members of the Federation, although it begs the question of what a Tellarite is doing in the Delta Quadrant.
Interesting that Starfleet appears to know Dal's species and that it seems to be a top-secret. The mystery deepens.
Cool episode back. ****.
Stargirl "Frenemies: Chapter Eight: Infinity Inc, Part Two"
I LOVED that episode. If the show was always this, I'd never say a bad thing about it.
What an empowering message and story about free will and choice. I love that both Bones and Helix turn out to be reasonable, and it's revealed nobody is held against their will. And yeah, Courtney's idea turns out to be right. And I love that the staff was willing to try it.
I also love that Pat says that Shade helped kill the JSA, and he vehemently denies it, and Pat points out that he was still an accessory. And that's true. And the argument that moves the Shade is that redemption is more than choosing not to do bad. It's choosing to do good.
It was very interesting learning about Pat's horrible father and it was very instructive to understanding Pat's psyche when he claimed to love him anyways. I believe him because I have an abusive person in my life that I also very much love. I've repaired that relationship but I'm guessing part of Pat's regret is that he was unable to. I sympathized and understood his love for that reason.
Man, that was great. *****.
Pennyworth: The Origin Of Batman's Butler "Hedgehunter"
That could go either way. Either the series is ruined from this point forward, or it becomes even better. I recognize that episode as pivotal, although I'm agnostic as to whether or not it was actually good, or even good for for the long-term health of the series.
Is Bet actually dead? If so, that seems to me to be a mistake. Unless her actress wanted to leave. But her fight with Salt was brutal and devastating.
And Alfie sleeping with the woman after finding out who she was is pretty unforgivable. I think it's the worst thing we've ever seen him do.
I love that when Mary's boyfriend comes downstairs in his casuals Alfie is holding a gun. That was truly funny.
I don't trust Aziz even when he suggested he recommended Alfie because he thought he'd be best for the job.
Now for the ending, The idea that Patrick Wayne was murdered in a dark alley by Thomas (while seemingly wearing a Gary Ghost costume, and in control of his faculties, no less) is really going to be hard for me to accept. It could lead to amazing things. But it strikes me as equally likely it's a shark jump. There is such a thing a paralleling later themes in a prequel. That's going a bit too far.
We'll see. I'll give it a middling grade, and reserve the right to change it higher or lower depending on how the season shakes out. ***.
