I find your take very interesting because they're clearly trying to show a well-intentioned Peter who does, unintentionally, screw his friends over. I don't think Aunt May's attention is his sole motivation, he's seen her bills, and he does feel that he should contribute if he can. When he sold his first photos to the Bugle, he was willing to give all the money to May. As far as selfishness goes, what did you think of the end of the Lizard episode where he decides to keep his powers simply because he realized he saved Connors?
