I disagree about the stereotypes, if only because I doubt Speilberg was actually self-aware enough to consider the Short Round stereotypes an "homage" to the old adventure serials. After all, he had a similar character in The Goonies which was definitely a "modern" feeling film. I simply think that it probably wasn't that big a deal making fun of Asians in the eighties. It just seems wrong-headed today.
The dinner scene (which I heard about) was precisely the reason I avoided seeing Temple when I was a kid. I was a squeamish tyke and it looks like I did myself a favor. The scene was even worse than I imagined. The heart ripping out scene was simply JUST as gross as I imagined.
