FUN FACT ABOUT EDDIE CAT
He has a stress ulcer. Like a BAD one. Causing chaos and fomenting destruction takes a HUGE toll on his mental and physical well-being. He enjoys the chaos for sure. But despite his claims to the contrary, he is not a sociopath and killing people is the least favorite part of his job.
Why give Eddie this specific reluctant facet? Is it he headed for a redemption arc?
No. It has to do with the fact that just based on the wins racked up in the saga, Eddie Cat is the single most successful and effective villain in the entire franchise, living or dead. No matter what he does, somehow it all feeds into his ultimate goal of causing chaos. And I also repeatedly point out that with the possible exception of Bernadette herself, Eddie Cat is truly the ONLY person on Earth Gilda truly fears. On some level Eddie Cat scares Gilda more than anyone else, a feat only Bernadette could possibly claim, while Eddie is the most successful villain in the saga.
I gave him that facet to make the reader shudder at the idea that Eddie is actually pulling his punches. The amount of real world suffering he causes the entire planet and everyone he meets is him using The Light Touch. Imagine what Gilda actually witnessed to make her legit fear him, and further imagine what would happen to the world if its most effective bad guy wasn't cursed with a speck of conscience. The fact that Eddie is so dangerous and effective despite the fact that he's not even really trying TOO hard, and his heart isn't in it suggests to me, that whatever reason Gilda fears him, she's right to do it. That notion even frightens ME as his creator.
His soft heart isn't done to make him more sympathetic or relatable (although it truthfully does both). It's done to make him and the entire concept behind him scarier (which I hope it does).
