Haven't written my will yet, but when I do Candice is getting all rights to The Un-Iverse after I die. And that isn't even a question. I may work alone, but Candice is actually second in charge if I'm gone.
Why? A lot of reasons, but tonight Candice reminded me why she is the right choice for the Stewardship of the Legacy.
She told me something about Otterman I didn't know.
Do you know how insanely rare that is? That somebody understands something about the saga better than I do?
I do need to clarify the thing she told me, while accurate, is not ENTIRELY accurate. I offered the opinion that Otterman's protestations of age differentials between himself and an adult Bernadette is bullshit of the highest order. And regardless of the fact that Candice taught me something with her next observation, I DO believe that when Otterman offers that excuse, he is doing it for a bullshit reason, and it's not something he actually believes.
Nonetheless, Candice pointed out there IS some reality in the idea that in certain aspects Otterman is more mature than Bernadette is. Which before she told me how and why I wouldn't have believed.
Otterman came into our world as a fully fledged adult when he was technically around 3 years old. He was an adult Giant Otter when he was transformed into what he is now, but him always being considered an adult means he has something in maturity Bernadette doesn't.
Despite the fact that he was a child all throughout the events of Gilda And Meek, at least as far as life experiences go, he was never treated as such by society at large. He was always treated like an adult, and often unkindly for the reason that he was always mistaken for one. And regardless of the fact that he and Bernadette are the same age with the same amount of life experiences, and despite the fact that Bernadette always acted like a miniature adult as a kid, the other adults still understood she WAS actually a kid, and gave her extra love and care for that reason.
Otterman never got ANY of that. From anybody in the Terran World. And it made him alienated. Where I disagree with Candice is that this is his perspective. I don't think Otterman possesses that level of self-awareness, and he IS actually using the age thing as an excuse to drive Bernadette away because she scares him and he believes he doesn't deserve her. But Candice is DAMN right that that WAS his reality, whether he absorbed it that way, or understood the unfairness of it or not.
And Candice is the first and ONLY person who has taught me things about my own story. I allow the reader a LOT of power in their own interpretations. But never before had a reader altered my own with their insights. Candice is to be trusted with Gilda And Meek for it and is the only person who can be.
