WHY DID I MAKE BERNADETTE RELIGIOUS? 

People have been wondering about Bernadette being a Republican and it sort of came from her both being religious and a contrarian who always argues with Gilda. But why did I make her religious to begin with? The character not only doesn't NEED to be a Republican to work and contrast with Gilda, she doesn't need to be a (as she puts it) "Good Catholic Girl" for contrast either. Why? 

There were three reasons. 

In every iteration of The Un-Iverse Vic Puff demonized Bernadette as an atheist. And somebody read the story and thought Bernadette was an atheist based on that. And if one of the takeaways a reader has about Bernadette is that's she's an atheist, then Vic Puff is way more credible of a character than I intended. I want you to recognize his stochastic terrorism for the bullshit it actually is, and making Bernadette a clear Christian was the best way to do that. 

The second reason was I wanted to suggest this know-it-all-kid doesn't actually think she has the answers deep down, and looks elsewhere for guidance. 

The third reason is uncomplimentary. Bernadette is extremely cruel and toxic to people she hates. I wanted a clear demonstration than often people who profess to follow Christ are complete assholes. Now on the whole, Bernadette's Republican values are solid. But the fact that Bernadette is relentlessly vicious and cruel is the third reason I made her a Christian.

Had to go to the ER. Still stings like a muthafrack. It's gonna be a rough few days. I'm going to call the Leasing Office and the Housing Authority and ask them to put off repairs and my apartment inspection for another couple of weeks. I need some time to mend.
