Also a review for the latest episode of WandaVision.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "A Beacon Of Hope"
I realize you can't start off a season of an arc cartoon full blast, but the nonsense in this episode reminded me greatly why I so disliked the early episodes last season. While I am a great believer in the storytelling "Slow burn" of starting off small and building from groundwork laid in the early episodes, that doesn't mean you have to make the early episodes lame to do it. **1/2.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "The Art Of Chill"
Sammy and ESPECIALLY Kenji are super annoying, and I don't like spending any time with either. That was my main takeaway from the episode. **.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "The Watering Hole"
The campfire is obviously Ben's.
I like the idea of the watering hole being neutral ground for the dinosaurs.
I don't find it remotely credible that the kids built an Ewok village all on their own, but like the Ewoks, it's sort of a wish fulfillment for the kids in the audience, so I won't complain too much.
Some exciting near-misses this episode.
Not bad. ***.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Salvation"
Okay, so the campfire wasn't Ben's, but he did show up at the end.
Very interesting episode, but I reserve the right to dislike it upon a rewatch depending on how things shake out. ***1/2.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Brave"
Things were starting to get interesting in the last episode, so of course they hit pause and then hit us with a flashback episode for this one. That's how genre works.
It was a good episode. Ben is the character who is always terrified, so they upped the scares and tension in the episode (to great effect). I like that he largely learned how to survive in the early days by following Bumpy's lead. That seems very true to life for me.
Solid. ****.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Misguided"
Hap turned out all right.
I thought the slow-mo explosion with the dinosaurs and motorbike was a keen moment.
Pretty good stuff all around. The latter half of this show's seasons always turn out better than the first. ****.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Step One"
Good action sequences and real stakes make this an exciting episode.
Although the real solution to making sure Mitch and Tiff don't get the guns, would be for Darius and Sammy to unpack them and shoot them themselves. But it's a kiddie show, so I get why they didn't go with the obvious solution. Heck, Mitch and Tiff never pointed the guns at the kids either. The show is TV-Y7, no matter what the occasional death would lead you to believe.
The T-Rex roaring at a hologram of itself was a pretty spiffy moment.
Kenji repeatedly pushing the green button is why he's the most annoying character on the show.
Another solid episode. ****.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous "Chaos Theory"
E750 is going to be a thorn next season.
Decent, but not as satisfying as last year. I am also gonna knock points off for Darius' whole "armed with friendship" spiel. It doesn't matter that Brooklynn gave him shade for it, the fact that he said it made the episode lame. That is not something you can just buy back with a meta moment.
It didn't escape my notice that the boat didn't actually leave the island. It's still in play.
All right ending. ***1/2.
WandaVision "We Interrupt This Program"
What's interesting here is that that felt very much like a Marvel movie. Much more-so than any previous television effort. Which makes me question the wisdom of airing WandaVision, with its bizarre sitcom format for the first three episodes, first out of the new Marvel Studios TV shows.
I like seeing how many real-world complications the Blip caused, and I imagine the trouble and fall-out to those out on spaceships to be absolutely lethal. Just the fact that it's such a big deal here is another reason I will never consider Agents of SHIELD or the other Jeph Loeb stuff MCU canon. NONE of those shows ever referenced the Blip. The excuse was they were supposed to have been set before it, but that wasn't true of Agents of SHIELD. Marvel Television was simply not given the full playbook, and as such I can never take it seriously. If Marvel Studios wants to bring back Coulson, Matt Murdock, Jessica Jones, or Frank Castle, that's fine. But I will consider any future MCU versions of the characters rebooted versions. Because the Blip was entirely ignored I don't accept any of the Marvel Television series as canon.
If we take the ending at face value, it looks like Wanda is the actual villain of the entire series.
Big smile at seeing Darcy again. In episode 4. Which again makes me question the wisdom of airing this series first.
The commercials seem to have been a part of the broadcast the FBI has seen, so I feel a little better about them. At least the show is acknowledging their actual existence in some way.
Fun stuff that raised the right questions. ****.
