Jun. 15th, 2017 07:59 pmMeans I caught up with "Dice" On Demand. This is a show I was infinitely curious about because of my utter loathing of Andrew Dice Clay. I was curious how they could possibly make him palatable to a general audience.
It's actually a pretty good show. But if it hopes to rehabilitate Dice by saying he isn't the exact same kind of misogynist, racist, and homophobe he is on stage, I don't think the show does Dice any good whatsoever.
Clay's biggest problem to me has always been tone. I imagine if Louis C.K. performed the exact same routine, I wouldn't necessarily find it funny, but I would not feel the same sense of revulsion I do for Dice. Daniel Tosh is proof of this. He is just as big of a racist and sexist, but people give him a free pass because he does everything in a giggly voice.
Dice is just as mean and angry on the show as he is on-stage. The fact that he is not portrayed as quite the bigot he portrayed himself as on stage doesn't water down the fact that the real Dice? The Dice he wants to present to the world? Is a complete ahole. It has nothing to do with the dirty routine. He's just a horrible and hateful person. If he did Mitch Hedberg's exact same warm and sunny sounding routine using his own mannerisms, I would still hate him.
The Adrien Brody episode, where he tails Dice because he is going to be playing a "masculine" role, and wants to look and sound the part, is more proof of this. He does some of Dice's actual stand-up, and it's almost funny. As much as they pretend that Brody is nailing Dice's mannerisms in that moment, he really is not. There is no actual malice in him, which is the biggest difference between Dice and most other comedians.
I use Clay a bit in my Gilda and Meek comics. Bernadette absolutely hates him, and Gilda doesn't get quite why. According to Gilda, Clay talks almost as dirty as Bernadette does, and is super conservative. He's the type of person Gilda should hate. Why does Bernadette?
Her exact response is: "Every time I hear his routine, he makes me want to defend the underclass. I am a freaking Republican. I shouldn't ever have to do that."
