I don't read superhero comics.
May. 31st, 2016 08:01 pmI hesitate to even comment on this. But it is just so wrong that I kind of have to.
The idea that Captain America is a Nazi and always HAS been a Nazi upsets me. Literally upsets me. I am sick to my stomach over that idea. Even if and when they retcon it, it is a sickening bit of storytelling.
Supposedly this was done to be a commentary about the creeping fascism in America from the rise of Donald Trump. Let me say a couple of things about that idea (which is nonsense).
1. There is nothing creeping about Trump's fascism. He is pretty open about his genocidal and evil agenda. There is nothing about Trump's fascism that sneaks up on you. It is out in the open, which is partly why he's so horrible. He's made that mainstream. But it didn't come out of nowhere and is just the logical extension of Republican hate-speech and riling up the tea-baggers.
2. Even if that WAS true, there had to be a better way to do a story about that idea than turning a character, who was initially a couple of Jewish immigrants way to speak up against Adolf Hitler and all of the evil he was committing, into a Nazi to do it. It's unnecessary to tell that story to wreck one of your most popular characters. Yeah, Trump sucks. But he only has power over your comics and stories if you let him. Trump forced no-one to turn a wonderful, admirable role model for children into a racist monster. Marvel Comics owns that. Not Trump.
I am still shaking a bit. This is infuriating.
