I have never seen The Purge.
Nov. 2nd, 2014 01:46 amI am not going to see the sequel. But I would just like to say the entire premise is built on a faulty view of humanity. The movie seems to believe that the only reason people don't devolve into evil degenerates is because we have laws against that. That's stupid. People, as a whole, aren't secretly monsters who would become serial killers if given the chance. We, as a whole, aren't fighting against something that sinister inside us.
This is the same type of belief that governs a lot of creationists. If you don't believe in a Sky God who will punish you if you misbehave, and reward you with eternal paradise if you don't, you will have no reason not to kill or steal.
Do you know the reason I don't kill or steal? I don't want to. It never strikes me as something remotely attractive or something I would try if I thought I could get away with it. I think people who think most people operate the way the people in the Purge do are the ones with the problems. In real life, it would never occur to most people to kill for no reason if given the chance.
Yes, there are countries in the Middle East and Africa that are a lot more chaotic and criminal than the U.S. But we don't live in them and it is stupid to believe we'd turn into them for a night if the law were changed.
The movies always seem to make life seem much worse than it actually is.
