Sarah Silverman is not funny.
Aug. 10th, 2007 03:18 pmShe is not cute. She is vile. If there was a female equivalent to Andrew Dice Clay it would be her. She's not as bad as Clay but it isn't for lack of trying. It's simply that no-one could ever be as bad as he is.
I was a casual fan of The Sarah Silverman Program so when Comedy Central announced they were going to show Jesus is Magic I set up my VCR. I was appalled. It was SO racist and disturbing. She got a couple of hisses and nervous laughs but for the most part the audience found her funny which was frightening. Although to be completely fair I laughed a couple of times and felt absolutely sick with myself afterwards.
I think the reason the show works and her stand-up doesn't is because she isn't the only person on the show. Whenever she acts selfish or like a racist egomaniac on the show the other cast members look at her as if she's sprouted three heads (which SHOULD be a normal reaction to the things she says and does). Without a surrogate for the audience to feel that Silverman is awful her stand-up is pretty hard to watch and even harder to laugh at. Plus, I really like some of the other cast members (the bit about the two gay guys getting into a huge passive aggressive one-upsmanship sarcasm contest over how great Tab Cola is was HILARIOUS).
I won't be watching another stand-up routine from Silverman. It was SO bad it might have even soured me on the show. I don't know because I haven't seen it since but if it did that's a shame.
