I'm really getting into The Office and I like all of the characters there (except for Micheal). The show doesn't really deal with office politics (outside of Micheal) so I'm grateful for that .
Micheal Scott is REALLY annoying. Case in point: Last night Kevin was waiting for a call from the doctor to see whether or not he had skin cancer on Micheal's birthday. When Micheal found out the reason why no-one was into his stupid party he actually got mad. His is one of the most selfish, arrogant characters on television. Even then the writers manage to inject some humanity into him occasionally.
Why does Peggy Hill bug me more? Probably because of Hank Hill and his releationship to her. Whenever Peggy has a stupid or ego-maniacal scene Hank protects her so that she never learns a lesson or has the face any consequences for her behavior. When she gave the recipe to mustard gas in a newspaper article as a cleaning solution Hank stole every copy of the paper in town to make sure she was blameless. The newspaper editor even gave her a promotion for this and Peggy's stupid behavior was rewarded as happens every single episode.
This doesn't happen with Micheal Scott. While no-one can say to his face what they think of him because he is the boss it is clear that nobody outside of Dwight in the office likes him. His behavior is met with rolled eyes and appalled silences and everybody seems sick to death of him in no uncertain terms. True, Micheal is so thick and deluded to actually SEE this resentment (he thinks he's a strong capable leader) his behavior is never rewarded and he usually winds up making a jackass of himself.
I don't like the message King of the Hill sends with Peggy. She is manipulative and stupid and Hank always protects her from anybody ever finding out. This may be realistic for a lot of people in the world but honestly the message that the matriarch of the family is the stupidest character on the show and the dad has the most common sense and has to protect her from herself is kind of sexist. I like the way Micheal Scott is portrayed by Steve Carell even though he is unlikable. He doesn't get a free pass for his behavior.
