DC's Legends Of Tomorrow "Seance And Sensibility"

That was a chore. Normally I give Arrowverse episodes that bad zero stars, but the last couple of scenes were interesting, and frankly it failed in a way unusual for Arrowverse shows. Usually Arrowverse shows suck because they write the characters badly to create forced drama. Here the characters themselves are all fine. It's the story itself that is horrendous. I disliked it from the get-go (I hate sex episodes of genre shows) but I hated it more and more as it was going along. The Bollywood musical number was inexcusable. A few weeks ago, the characters turned into puppets. And I almost said to myself then "What is my limit to craziness?" And them bursting into song and dance here told me what it actually was. And the really bad thing about most musical episodes is that they are badly written and corny to work around the songs. A good musical episode like Buffy's "Once More With Feeling" is the rarity. I have no idea why so many dramas attempt it. They are almost always terrible. This one was worse than most. Not as bad as Riverdale or Once Upon A Time, but definitely in the bottom rung of the attempts.

I have to give the episode props for one good thing: despite the fact that people seem to be falling in love against their wills, I feel very strongly that the episode managed to lack the rape subtext that is present in almost every other sex spell episode in genre shows. As much as I hate the trope, I will say I respect the show for not having characters do things they didn't actually want to do. And the reason I hate love spell episodes is because writers think they are funny, when there is almost always a rape or two present. I didn't feel that in this specific episode, although I will also concede that may just be me. I am a male of the species, and just as clueless about that stuff as any other person of my gender.

I have to say I really hate the character of Mona. It's bad enough that she's stupid and predictable. She's pulling focus from characters I like like Rory. And frankly, this was supposed to be Constantine's big season. That's what it was billed as at any rate. And they've turned it into all about her instead. I am very unhappy with this character. But I don't expect her back next year. I think she will wind up very unpopular with the audience, and widely considered the Arrowverse's version of Wesley Crusher. She is just awful on every level.

The idea that Hank wanted to build a theme park is ludicrous, but unlike the musical number it was a level of ludicrous I was willing to accept. Provisionally at least.

I love Ray instantly believing Nora's innocence just upon her say-so, especially seconds after immediately telling her nothing would change his mind. I see Adam West looking into the Old Comedy Ball and saying "Ha ha ha! I tell you that man is very easily persuaded!"

Anyone else weirded out by the fact that he kissed Nate? I didn't find it either gross or out of character. It's just freaking awkward and not actually funny. It's cringe instead.

Which pretty much sums up my default emotion as I was watching this stupid episode. Sheesh. *.

Arrow "Lost Canary"

Wow, I really liked that. I've been giving Arrow nothing but cr*p this season but that was a really good episode.

I love the debate between Felicity and Dinah. I am on Felicity's side in wanting to give Laurel the chance she desperately needed. And yet, Dinah is 100% right that everything she has done is her own decision. They cannot blame themselves for that. Laurel is a grown-@$$ woman and it is not expected for most people to turn to a life of crime once their lives go a little sideways. I think it was very important for me to hear the idea that people are responsible for their own actions. As long as that is voiced by Dinah, I am okay with Felicity and Sara trying to talk Laurel down.

I miss the White Canary costume on Legends. I know the time travel means they usually have to dress in period clothes, but I really miss Sara wearing that outfit on the ship. The bad thing about the latter seasons of Legends is the lack of costumes. I can't even recall seeing Ray Palmer in his Atom suit this season. I miss the crazy get-ups.

Here is a question and a fault with the episode: Aren't Oliver and Diggle technically police? Why are they leaving that Longbow Hunter tied up to escape? Shouldn't they be taking him in to answer for his many, MANY crimes and murders? That didn't sit right with me.

I like Felicity asking if all of the times Sara called her cute was flirtation. Opinion: She's overthinking it. Aside from the fact that she knew Sara was bisexual even then because of Nyssa, it doesn't matter what your orientation is. Felicity is simply cute in the same way Barry Allen and Ray Palmer are. Flirtation has nothing to do with someone voicing that true opinion.

I love Laurel showing up in the flashforwards at the end. This is probably the first flashforward I've liked if I'm being honest. I love that we don't see Laurel in the future until she makes the choice she does in this episode. And her showing up at the end was great because it lets us know that it actually stuck. It was welcome, as was the idea that there is a whole Underground of Canaries in the future based upon what Sara, Laurel, and Dinah started. It's an incredibly empowering message, which isn't even lessened by most of them getting killed off. Because that's the thing about legacies and empowerment: There will always be more. It doesn't stop if some of the people in the movement do. It's bigger than everyone in the movement. It's an idea, and that not something an anti-vigilante robot can actually kill.

Very impressed this week. Good job, producers. ****1/2.

Teen Titans Go! "Booty Eggs"

Why is it the Teen Titans celebrate the same holiday each year and yet never age?

Creepy bunnies laying eggs is just as gross as this show says it is.

The little bunnies reminded me of Gremlins.

I liked the animation of all of the eggs pouring into the color mix.

Decent, although not great. ***.

Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure "Destinies Collide"

My default mode watching that finale was sighing in resignation every 2 minutes. It was beyond tedious. You knew the ending, they spent the whole episode teasing it, and we basically spent 45 minutes on unrelated nonsense.

What kills me is that the episode itself is padded beyond belief. It would probably only be 11 minutes long if the characters talked to each other like adults. Which is the thing that drives me nuts specifically. Tangled is the one kids show where the characters DO talk out their problems like adults. I am unhappy everyone here suffers from the plot related stupidity of every other kids show.

How can the season justify the journey we took, especially all of the unrelated detours, as long as the last episode is padded and pointless? I think Justice League Unlimited did a great job with its Cadmus finale simply because it brought back things from earlier in the season we thought were unrelated standalone stuff (like the Ultimen and the Dark Heart) and tied everything together. Heck, Big Hero 6 did the same thing with the giant mecha. No, here it actually turns out those pointless detours we took WERE actually pointless and had nothing to do with anything. Can you blame me for resenting the episode and the season? I don't think this arc deserved 5 episodes much less 26.

Tangled was one of my favorite cartoons last year, even if I thought the finale was shaky. This whole season was flawed from the ground up, and led us nowhere but a cliffhanger the show told us would happen at the beginning of the episode, and expects us to be surprised and devastated by it anyways. This is kids show drama at its worst.

Do you know what kills me? DuckTales had a super sucky finale last year too. Which tells me that for many serialized Disney shows, they are better at set-up than pay-off. Which for shows with a ton of set-up is bad. Luckily Big Hero 6 had an amazing finale, but for all I know it could have been a fluke.

For the record Cassandra's betrayal is good for a single reason: It answers the perplexing question of why she was entirely absent during the sequel short "Tangled Ever After". It's not a good answer, but it's an answer nonetheless.

Also for the record, I am well aware Evil Cassandra could turn out to be Mirror Cassandra from an earlier episode. To all those defending this episode for that reason, let me ask you this: If that is true, was what we just saw a remotely appropriate ending to the season? If we learn it's not Cassandra after all, would you feel relief like the producers would want, or jerked around, like how I would feel? The reason the cliffhanger sucks is because it doesn't make the episode better whether Cassandra is truly evil or not.

Do you know what's bad? It turns out the strong kick@$$ woman on the show is a bad guy. Did the producers even stop to think about the message they were sending by doing that?

I hope I'm wrong. I hope the last season doesn't suck. But lord, this was the make-or-break season for the show, and it was totally broken. Please do better next year, producers. *1/2.

Muppet Babies "Puppy For A Day"

An episode with Rizzo, Bunsen and Beaker, Camilla AND cameos from Statler and Waldorf? I'm in Muppet Heaven.

It's a bit ludicrous that at the end the puppy is actually bigger than the babies.

Cute (if predictable) episode. ***.

Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles "Sparring Partner"

Raph IS so not reading her tone.

I love Donnie saying "Perhaps we should crane our necks upwards and see from whence it came." That was a quality bit of comedy.

Also funny was the idea that dibs were only good for pizza, skateboards, and Donnie's stuff.

I love the designs of the paper ninjas.

Good episode. ***1/2.

Power Rangers: Beast Morphers "Hangar Heist"

Didn't like that. I felt the conflict between the Rangers was beyond forced and there was no reality behind it. I doubt even the most antisocial of toddlers would recognize themselves in Devon's crazy snit.

Also, this has always been a problem for this season, but it's stark enough here to finally comment on: A large part of the comic relief of the season is watching the fat kid try to run and always falling down. It's fat-shaming. Full stop. Believe it or not I can excuse fat-shaming on shows for adults. It's realistic. There is a lot of shame society attaches to that. But it certainly is inappropriate on a kids show, especially in 2019.

Poor episode. **.

American Dad! "Fantasy Baseball"

I love Francine telling Roger to clean up the mess he's made before doing his thing. They need to do that every time.

Snot is turned on by Goblin Maidens because Snot is repulsive.

I love Stan asking Steve why he makes it so hard to love him. Good question.

Geniuses aren't the ones who tend to eat Astroturf.

I love Francine questioning the logic of Klaus. He's not even in the water, he's just touching it! That's not how fish work!

I thought the ending was too dark, but it was one of the only things I didn't actually like. ***1/2.

Game Of Thrones "Winterfell"

That was a lot to digest but my first iron-clad impression is that Daenerys is not as good at the politics thing as she thinks she is. I still think she'll win the Game of Thrones, but she makes it SO hard for herself with her righteousness. Jon Snow's biggest strength as a leader, which is perhaps something even Ned Stark didn't have, is his ability to see nuance. He didn't execute people if he didn't have to to make a statement. He was comfortable both in the power he had and the power he was willing to give up. Executing the Tarleys was the biggest of unforced errors on Dany's end. Yeah, the Tarleys sucked, but their one decent son was Jon's best friend. She didn't bother to find out that background before she did it, or even contemplate there would be consequences to her doing it. Sam would not have been inclined to EVER tell Jon the truth if he didn't have a personal reason to believe Dany shouldn't be trusted with power. And the reason he believes that is now a reason that Jon agrees with him about. He is going to be upset with Daenerys. The whole Heir to the Iron Throne thing doesn't REALLY matter to him. But Sam raised a very fair question: Jon was willing to give up his crown to unite the realms for the good of the North. Is Daenerys a good enough person to do the same thing for him? I personally don't think she is, but I don't see this as being as huge of a problem family-wise as the writers think I might. On some level they want me to be grossed out they're cousins and doing it. But Jaime raped his sister with no consequences whatsoever. It's amazing what things the writers will think upset me and what things won't.

But just based on the twincest I don't think a marriage alliance between Jon and Dany is out of the question, cousins or not. They could conceivably have a fairytale ending. The only question is whether Daenyrus would ever accept it. It would actually be a smart and prudent move on her end which is why I don't see her doing it. But things would have been a LOT easier for her if she hadn't executed Sam's family for essentially "neener neener neener".

I have to give props to Dany for at least having the courtesy to admit what she did to Sam's family in person, in the moment. But again, that's probably poor planning and not thinking about the consequences. It's admirable either way though.

Speaking of bogus executions, Cersei telling Euron Greyjoy that she has had people executed for less isn't a brag or a statement of fierce bad@$$ery. It's a sign of weakness and incompetence. Basically only fascists, and stupid fascists at that, execute people for rudeness. And this again brings me back uncomfortably to Daenerys. Granted a public rebuke does deserve a stern response. But her going overboard was a sign of weakness not strength.

I love that Arya likes the dragons. Also liked that she defended Sansa and that she's happy to see Gendry too.

I don't agree with Sansa about much in this episode, and for sure her intelligence is overstated by Arya. But when she slams Tyrion by saying "I used to think you were the cleverest man I ever met," it doesn't matter if she's wrong about everything else, she's right that Tyrion is an idiot to trust Cersei. As seen in last season's finale, Cersei immediately went back on her word and betrayed everybody. I will never buy Sansa as the master manipulator in the Game of Thrones. But she doesn't have to be to understand Cersei is full of cr*p. Why doesn't Tyrion?

To be honest, that was a reunion I was looking forward to. Didn't go as cordially as I'd like, but it could have gone worse. I like Sansa saying Joffrey's wedding had it's moments. I am not sorry that little turd is gone either.

I was very worried about the boy tree climber at the beginning. Little kid climbers don't do well on this show.

Speaking of which, I think the show is crazy to ask me to sympathize with Jaime's guilt regarding Bran. I can understand that there is nuance to the Kingslayer stuff. But it's like Jamie is the worst redemption story the writers could give us otherwise. Forget the fact that he raped his sister so casually for a moment. He pushed an innocent kid out of a window and crippled him. Why should I ever give two cr*ps about his guilt or his remorse? There are plenty of killers in prison who regret their actions. I don't think Oz would have been wise to turn their prisoners into heroic leading men we were supposed to admire.

It's interesting they completely revamped the main title for the last season. It makes sense because the entire landscape is now different, but the effects look much more computer generated and less hand-made than the earlier titles. It weird that they look less realistic than effects made nearly ten years ago. But as spiffy and professional as they are, they also are missing a great deal of the authentic medieval feel that first pop-up titles had.

Bronn and the naked women is the precise reason I often hate this show, and don't take it the least bit seriously. I supposed I should, but as long as it always does that, I can't. It's added nothing to either the story or the characters. It was simply designed to get the male viewers horny. I think there is definitely a place in society for soft-core cable porn. But I don't have to take it seriously.

I love the fact that Yara headbutts Theon upon him freeing her, and then they're cool. I love that. I especially love how understanding she is at him wanting to go back to Winterfell to fight for the Starks. The Greyjoys are a pretty miserable lineage. Theon and Yara are the only two decent ones, and frankly it's a stretch to even call Theon decent. He just doesn't look so sucky compared to his father and brother.

Varys is right about something. Tyrion is high and mighty about the ethics of torture and right and wrong. And yet he can't stop making cruel eunuch jokes. I'm supposed to think he's the good Lannister but I don't think he's all that good, or at least all that nice.

If Bronn takes Cersei up on her mission to kill Jamie and Tyrion, he's nuts. Not just because Cersei holds the losing hand in the Game of Thrones. It's that anyone who does that to her own brothers would do it to anyone, assassins she might want to disavow included. Cersei biggest weakness is that she has a stunning lack of friends because she's betrayed and killed them all. Bronn is not stupid. Surely he's noticed that, just based on what she is asking him to do. I resent the idea that Cersei is on the Iron Throne for the simple fact that she's almost as poor a planner as Stannis, and unlike Stannis has no good people in her ear. It's unfair somebody this stupid currently sits on the Iron Throne. She sucks as much as her son did.

That was an interesting premiere. Like last season, a lot happened in a short space of time. The show doesn't feel the need to pad things out or dawdle when the characters are already together and it's better for it. ****.

The Blacklist "Lady Luck"

I'm just going to straight up say I didn't enjoy that.

The stuff with Red was stomach churning. And I've bemoaned the show for coming up with new or clever crimes that would be alarmingly imitable by society at large, but luckily this crime won't inspire copycats simply because there would be nothing in it for the criminal. But it was a bummer crime anyways.

Max Casella is a name that takes me back. The dude was a character actor back when he was 15 years old. Not too many child actors who grew up in the age of teen heartthrobs could claim that. He has the credibility there that Johnny Depp only WISHES he always had. But he still doesn't get cast a lot. The only things I've ever seen him in were Doogie Howser, Newsies, Ed Wood, and then this. He is not a guy who gets cast in a lot of stuff, even if he's great. And this role is forgettable and basically crumbs for the guy. But I don't think he gets a lot to choose from.

Is this going to be the show for the next few weeks? If so, I won't enjoy it. *.

Blindspot "'Ohana"

I can't get enough of Bill Nye on this show.

Random Bill Nye thoughts.

1. Bill Nye's daughter just killed two people. Elephant in the room.

2. Weller says he'd kill to have Bill Nye for a father. Considering Weller's father is a child-killer, that is not the compliment he thinks it is.

3. I agree with Nye that there are sparks between Patterson and Rich, but I think that's probably only on Patterson's end. I think Rich is still all about Boston. Although if Patterson wants, she can land Rich to make Boston jealous.

4. The logic of Bill Nye's fame on this show eludes me. Everyone knows the Science Guy but nobody recognizes they go to work every day with Lady Sif? C'mon now.

Other things of note:

1. The Weller's mother reveal was stupid and ridiculous. That is SO television. And I don't like it.

2. Speaking of SO television, everyone keeps going on about how rough Zapata looks after no night's sleep, and her actress is actually glowing like a supermodel. I understand producers are loathe to make their hot actresses unattractive for any reason, but as long as that is so, there is no reason to pretend it isn't.

3. Ginny was played by the same actress who played Robin on Jessica Jones. She cleans up good.

And finally my biggest problem with the episode: It happened early, so it was able to recover a bit once Bill Nye showed up, but Lord, it sucked. It's Weller making fun of Jane's poetry from when she was a teenager. You know what? He sucks. Only a truly uncool and lame person would do that. What frustrates me is that the writer of the episode doesn't actually know that. It's treated as funny and gentle ribbing instead. And whether or not Jane takes offense at his mocking (and if I were Jane and had the tragic things in my past I did, I definitely would) it's pretty much the most loathsome, juvenile and childish thing a male can do to a female outside of snapping her bra. It's immature and uncool and the writers are playing it as flirtatious which is absolutely crazy to me. It's like the show wants me to think Weller is a rough-neck tough guy. In reality, he's a 12-year-old ahole. It amazes me the show thinks Weller is a better hero than he is. But Sullivan Stapleton, who is in fact the worst actor on the show, gets away with cr*p an unattractive good actor never would.

I'd give this an extra high Bill Nye related grade if Weller weren't busy sucking all of the fun out of the room. ***1/2.

Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay

That level of horrific violence and depravity is not a "fun romp". Bruce Timm has been getting it on all sides for The Killing Joke and Batman And Harley Quinn. But this is far worse than both projects.

I believe that every death you show in fiction makes a statement. That's probably an unpopular opinion, but I take death in fiction VERY seriously. And I think TV and movies would be better off if everyone else did too.

I don't necessarily object to "funny" violence, even if it's gory. I've been guilty of that in my comic for sure, so don't be afraid to call me on that. But I object to UNNECESSARY violence being portrayed as funny. All of the death and destruction in the movie did not service either the narrative or the characters, and was basically there for the viewer to eat up and enjoy. That's the specific problem I have.

And the humor in this movie is so bad. Harley Quinn is supposed to be a fan favorite break-out character. And she's a non-entity for me. All of her lines and jokes are groaners, and I'm wondering if the Joker she is the moll to is Cesar Romero. That's how boring she is.

And why does Harley believe she's going to Heaven? Isn't she Jewish? Does she even believe in Heaven?

The writers actually think Copperhead saying "Boo!" repeatedly to strangers is funny. I didn't. I noticed something sad about the unfunny jokes as I rewatched the movie. After each lame gag the movie sort of seems to "pause" for a moment to allow laughter from the viewer that it's crazy to believe is coming. It's awkwardly timed and makes me feel sad at the same time.

Speaking of which, I cannot think of a more uncomfortably lame joke than Deadshot telling Boomerang his idea of Heaven is Boomerang keeping his mouth shut. What kills me is that the movie thinks that's funny and doesn't have the rest of the characters rib him for the weak burn that actually is.

I am also disturbed and alarmed that there will be a large number of fans who WILL enjoy it for all of the reasons it's actually terrible. They'll see all of the bloodsplattering violence and vulgarity as an actual selling point. Maybe the producers wouldn't be giving us movies this disgusting if there wasn't a market for this. If the fans at conventions hadn't been screaming over and over again how much they loved and wanted R rated movies, seemingly completely unaware there has never actually ever BEEN a good animated American R rated movie before. These should be introducing these characters to a broader audience to get people who don't read comic books into them. Whether the productions are geared for adults or not, DC should WANT a broad audience for all of them.

The reason I buy and support these movies at all is because I want future DCAU stuff. Believe it not, as shaky as it was, Batman And Harley Quinn is what I was looking for. I haven't seen Justice League Vs. The Fatal Five yet, but that looks even more up my alley. But I feel like I have been spending over 30 movies watching things I didn't enjoy to get two movies (or in the case of counting Batman And Harley Quinn, one and a half) I did. I will acknowledge that not every movie will or even should be catered specifically to me. But I don't read the comics. As far as superhero stuff goes, I can safely be considered "general audiences". I am the definition of the mushy center. I cannot be the only person put off by this.

This movie went out of its way to make The Flashpoint Paradox canon. Unpopular opinion. Flashpoint Paradox sucks for the same reasons this did, only because it wasn't quite THIS level, people accepted it. I always thought it was depraved and this is about a hundred times that.

I like that upon seeing the hole in Zoom's head Floyd says "Nice shot". That's pretty much adding insult to injury if you ask me. I also like that Harley is getting ready to puke but the icicle in her mouth is blocking it.

"Go ahead. Make my afterlife," is not a terrible line.

The stuff with Two-Face and Professor Pyg made my skin crawl, but both of those characters tend to do that anyways.

Hate this version of Doctor Fate. But it's clear the writers love him, so I can give them that. Greg Grunberg seems to be having fun at any rate.

I dislike any Vandal Savage who is not actually Immortal. That's the character's entire hook and selling point to me. The producers in the commentary consider him a second tier Ra's Al Ghul. But Ra's isn't actually Immortal or invulnerable. He's just ageless and refuses to die. The fact that Justice League's Vandal Savage simply could not be killed was the character's biggest selling point over Ra's to me. That's actually what makes him interesting if no matter how many times you defeat him, he's just going to pop up later in history as somebody else.

Still, for some reason I find the notion that he's had more brushes with death in the past ten years with the advent of Metahumans than all of the rest of his life before that put together interesting.

Scandal says her father "likes" Wonder Woman. That truly disturbs me.

Amanda Waller is the worst. It's bad enough she says that Bronze Tiger is a soldier and dying is a part of the job. She actually calls Killer Frost a "trick b-word". Seriously? She sucks.

For some reason I like the idea that Bronze Tiger has to tell Harley that 1700 hours is five o'clock. What I liked is there is no judgment behind his clarification to her.

Unfortunately I thought Bronze Tiger's monologue about Heaven and Hell was tedious. On the commentary James Tucker raves that it's the sort of thing somebody should read when auditioning for a part. I don't think nearly as highly of it. It's 100% average, and thinks it's more meaningful than it is.

I also can give them the fact that the Get Out Of Hell Free Card is a darn good MacGuffin. Granted, the writers here didn't actually come up with it, but I really love that many plot reversals hinged on the character holding it using it as a shield knowing the rest of the characters would never kill them as long as they held it.

The card was wasted on Tiger though. He IS noble and religious, and did a deathbed repentance. He probably would have made it to Heaven even without the card. Still, Deadshot is right that it's better Waller doesn't have it.

Waller says the card "feels cold". Isn't she wearing gloves?

I like that they subtly set up that Waller is dying early in the film which gives her a personal incentive to want the card. Which raises an interesting question. This mission must have been entirely Waller's doing. Cadmus would never have sanctioned it if they knew she was just going to use the card on herself. And it's the fact that she is so trigger-happy with the bombs which tells me she is just as big an evildoer as anyone on Task Force X.

I'm betting the Zoe's roommate who asks to see Deadshot's guns has a really interesting backstory. How would SHE know when her shrink goes to sleep anyways?

I thought the movie was in bad taste and I didn't like it. *.

The Death Of Superman Sneak Peek:

I love that they got husband and wife team Jerry O'Connell and Rebecca Romijn to voice Superman and Lois. Although the producers selling this as something we had never seen before are kidding themselves because this is a full on remake of Superman: Doomsday. ***1/2.

Outback Rogue: Captain Boomerang:

I didn't know the character was initially a child's spokesman for his parent's toy company. Honestly, the entire character is ridiculous. It's amusing the comics and movie think I should take him seriously. ***.

Nice Shot, Floyd!: The Greatest Marksman In The DCU:

Deadshot has a ridiculous origin too. What is with the top hat and magician's outfit? Also, if he never misses, why is Batman still alive? ***.

The Power Of Plot Devices, MacGuffins, and Red Herrings:

Interesting exploration of the difference between the three, but I think the definitions are nowhere NEAR as fixed as that one guy thinks they are. Sometimes a thing can be two out of those three. For the record, the Get Out Of Hell Free card, MacGuffin or Plot Device, is actually clever and the one thing about the movie I liked. This featurette pointed out something annoying without understanding it was annoying. But the producers were like "Bronze Tiger is actually virtuous and a good guy. It felt right that the card went to someone who deserved it." The problem is Bronze Tiger is so righteous, I doubt he even needed it. It felt like a waste of perhaps the most valuable treasure in the world. ****.
