Free Comic Book Day! Comic Book reviews!
May. 5th, 2007 03:37 pmI got a mess load of free comics today. I got Archie, Mickey Mouse, Gumby, Transformers, Legion of Super Heroes in the 31st Century, Peanuts, Family Guy, Bongo Comics Free For All (with The Simpsons and Futurama stories), Archie, and Battlestar Galactica along with my regular titles of Justice League Unlimited, Teen Titans Go!, Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil, Walt Disney's Vacation Parade and Buffy: Season Eight.
Reviews of Shazam!, Vacation Parade, Mickey Mouse and Buffy Season Eight below. I also picked up two issues of Adventures in the DC Universe.
I also picked up Dinosaurs seasons three and four on Tuesday. VERY cute and funny. I'll have a review when I finish the set.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season Eight
"The Long Way Home: Part Three" by Joss Whedon
GREAT cliffhanger and if THAT is the Big Bad this year I'll be VERY happy.
Fun Willow stuff.
I want to know who kissed Buffy (I hope it's Xander).
The three way dream with naked Spike, Angel and Nurse Buffy was funny and I like that Ethan Rayne returned. I also thought Giles holding council with that demon was cool as I like the idea of the humans negotiating for peace rather that fighting.
And like I said that was a COOL cliffhanger. I think Willow may be in a REALLY bad spot.
Excellent issue. ****1/2.
Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil: Part 3" By Jeff Smith
A little bit more cursing than I'm comfortable with but the story still had a lot about it to recommend.
I'm bummed Mary disappeared right near the beginning though as she is easily the most fun character.
I think it's really interesting how Captain Marvel and Billy Batson share a body and can have conversations with each other. This was never made clear in JLU's Clash and I find it fascinating.
Not as good as parts one and two but I still liked it. ****.
Mickey Mouse Giveaway
"The Robin Hood Adventure" by Floyd Gottfredson: REALLY cool story that reminded me of Gumby with Mickey falling into that book. A LOT of fun stuff and I really like how Mickey earned the respect of Little John, Robin Hood and Richard the Lion-Hearted. But... The ending was a HUGE let-down. ****.
"Mickey's Rival" by Floyd Gottfredson: It's just a gag story with Mickey vying for Minnie's affections with Mortimer but it DOES have quite a few cute jokes. The Bad: Minnie RARELY comes off as superficial and unlikable as in Mortimer stories. She's serious approaching Daisy Duck levels here. ****.
Vacation Parade #4
Donald Duck in "The Crocodile Collector" by Don Rosa: Classic story with a REALLY unexpected ending. I love how Rosa lets Donald be Donald here and he is an overzealous crank but not actually stupid. Rosa may humiliate Donald too frequently in his stories but NOBODY writes Donald funnier and more likable than him. REALLY good. ****1/2.
Donald Duck in "Donald Learns the Ropes" by Carl Barks;: I wasn't really feeling this ten-pager. Barks early WDC&S Donald ten pagers all made Donald too unlikable for my taste. His longer adventures are almost always better. ***.
Uncle Scrooge in "The Metal Detector": BOOOOOORRRRIIIIINNNNNGGGG. **.
Mickey Mouse in "Caught in the System": I love Sylvester Shyster and I LOVE him telling Mickey that HE wasn't his arch-enemy but the Phantom Blot was. I should have KNOWN Sylvester was up to no good but I really enjoyed seeing him on Mickey's side in the first half of the story. The courtroom antics and crazy laws were kind of hard to take seriously though. ***.
Minnie Mouse and Horace Horsecollar in "Road to Trouble": Note to writers: Trying to put character development in Mouse stories is a WASTE OF TIME BECAUSE EVERYTHING RESETS TO SQUARE ONE AT THE END OF THE STORY. Don Rosa can get away with deeper character stuff because his stories are so continuity heavy but Horace and Minnie getting closer will NEVER be brought up again. **1/2.
Donald Duck in "The Incredible Duck": Well, it's about TIME the writers did an Incredible Hulk parody considering Donald's legendary temper. I just wish it was actually good. **.
Huey, Dewey and Louie in "Stand-In Sitter": The story was kind of old hat but I REALLY liked how instead of Donald being MAD at the nephews for accidentally putting the babysitter through the wringer he was actually impressed. ***1/2.
Donald Duck in "Bargain Basement": For a story about Donald buying up LOADS of discount and possibly tainted meat, this story should have been funnier. ***.
